CAG Report Highlights ATEPFO's Financial and Operational Lapses
A report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) found that the Assam Tea Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (ATEPFO) has many problems.
Many tea workers in Assam are not registered with ATEPFO, so they miss out on benefits.
Some tea estates have not paid their workers' provident fund (PF) money for a long time.
The CAG also found that ATEPFO made some risky investments that lost money.
Additionally, many family pension claims were not processed quickly.
The report shows that ATEPFO needs to improve to ensure tea workers get the benefits they deserve.
39,120 eligible tea workers in Assam are not registered with ATEPFO, missing out on benefits.
Rs 315.45 crore shortfall in PF contributions from 334 tea estates as of March 2022.
19 ATCL-owned tea estates have not deposited PF contributions since 2005, with outstanding dues of Rs 386.64 crore.
ATEPFO settled only 10-39% of family pension claims between 2017 and 2022.
ATEPFO's risky investments in corporate bonds resulted in a loss of Rs 11.42 crore in interest.
