Comet C/2025 R3: Brightness and Visibility
Comet C/2025 R3 is a special comet that will come close to Earth in April 2026.
It will be very bright because of a phenomenon called forward scattering, where sunlight reflects off the dust in its tail.
The comet will be closest to the Sun on April 20 and closest to Earth on April 27.
Because of a new moon on April 17, the skies will be dark, making it easier to see the comet in the early morning.
The comet will appear about 15 degrees above the eastern horizon in mid-April, just before sunrise.
Astronomers are excited because this comet might be visible without telescopes or binoculars.
Comet C/2025 R3 will reach perihelion on April 20, 2026, and its closest approach to Earth on April 27, 2026.
The comet will be 76.3 million kilometers from the Sun at perihelion and 70.8 million kilometers from Earth at its closest approach.
Forward scattering, where sunlight reflects off dust particles in the comet's tail, could make it brighter and visible to the naked eye.
The new moon on April 17, 2026, will enhance visibility by darkening the skies, making it easier to spot the comet in the pre-dawn hours.
The comet will be visible about 15 degrees above the eastern horizon in mid-April, an hour before sunrise, from the Northern Hemisphere.
