HC Sides With Retrenched Leather Corp Staff After 26 Years
Imagine some people who used to work at a leather company in Punjab got laid off.
The company closed down, and the government had a special plan in 1992 to help the workers.
But later, the government changed the plan.
Some of the workers who were laid off weren't getting the help they were supposed to.
These workers went to court, and the case went on for 26 years.
Finally, the court said the government had to give those workers the same help as the other workers from the 1992 plan, even though the rules changed later.
The court said that because the workers were supposed to get help from the 1992 plan, the government couldn't take that away.
Punjab and Haryana High Court ruled in favor of former Punjab State Leather Development Corporation employees.
The court directed the state to extend benefits from a 1992 policy to retrenched employees.
The ruling comes after a 26-year legal battle initiated in 1999 by former employees.
The state had argued against applying the 1992 policy due to a 1995 amendment.
The court stated the 1995 amendment could not negate rights from the 1992 policy.
