Shakeela Wave: How Kerala's Small Theatres Chose Her Over Superstars

Imagine a movie star so popular that her name alone could fill a theatre.

About 25 years ago, the big stars of Kerala's movie world were Mohanlal and Mammootty, but some small theatres were struggling to attract audiences.

Then an actor named Shakeela came along with movies that were cheap to make yet brought in big crowds.

Her film Kinnarathumbikal reportedly cost about 10 to 12 lakh rupees but is thought to have earned around 4 crore rupees.

In 2001, Shakeela appeared in 30 of the 97 Malayalam films released that year, nearly one out of every three.

Movie makers copied her style so much that the market became overcrowded and repetitive.

Later, cable television, pirated videos and the internet gave people other ways to watch similar content at home, so the wave faded.

Recently, Shakeela had surgery for a neck problem that she said came from long hours of using her mobile phone.

She came home wearing a neck collar after the operation cost Rs 3 lakh.
