Government Launches Medicine-Safety Tools and Biovigilance Programme in India

The Indian government introduced new tools to help keep medicines and medical treatments safer.

These include a new edition of the National Formulary of India and a mobile app for reporting possible medicine side effects.

The government also approved a programme to watch for problems linked to transplant medicines and biological products.

Hospitals received guidance on reporting problems caused by medical devices.

The new formulary can be accessed online.

Officials said these systems will help collect and study safety information from across India.

They also said India now contributes more information to the World Health Organization’s patient-safety database.

The overall goal is to help patients receive safe, effective and appropriate medicines.
