Ladakh Announces Compensation One Year After Fatal Police Firing

Ladakh Announces Compensation One Year After Fatal Police Firing

Ladakh has announced money for families of four civilians who died during police firing in Leh.

Each family will receive Rs 15 lakh.

People with major injuries will receive Rs 3 lakh, while those with minor injuries will receive Rs 1 lakh.

The clashes happened on 24 September last year during protests for statehood for Ladakh.

More than 80 civilians and the same number of police officers were injured.

Authorities said violent mobs damaged government and Bharatiya Janata Party offices.

They blamed climate activist Sonam Wangchuk for helping incite the violence and later detained him under the National Safety Act.

A judicial inquiry is still examining the police firing.

The Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance had complained that compensation was delayed.
