Army Considers Pilot Project for Women in Territorial Army
The Indian Army is thinking about starting a small test program to let women join a special part-time army called the Territorial Army for the first time.
This means women could become 'citizen soldiers'.
At first, only a few groups, called battalions, would have women recruits.
If this test goes well, more women might be allowed to join other battalions later.
The government really wants to support women serving in the military, a concept called 'Nari Shakti'.
The Territorial Army has been around since 1948 and is made up of regular people who volunteer to help when needed.
These citizen soldiers have a long history of helping the army in important missions, even in past wars.
The Army is considering a pilot project to induct women into Territorial Army (TA) battalions for the first time.
Recruitment of women will initially be limited to a few TA battalions.
This initiative aims to gradually expand opportunities for women in the armed forces, aligning with the 'Nari Shakti' emphasis.
The Territorial Army operates on the 'citizen soldier' concept and currently has about 50,000 personnel.
TA units have a history of active involvement in military operations since 1948.
