Indian Consumption Looks Strong, but GST Signals Remain Mixed

Indian Consumption Looks Strong, but GST Signals Remain Mixed

The article says people in India appear to be spending strongly this year.

However, one important measure is giving a less positive signal.

The government collected ₹10.4 trillion in GST during the first five months of 2026-27.

That was an increase of 3.8%.

In the same period a year earlier, GST collections had grown 9.9%.

GST is a tax charged when people buy many goods and services.

But tax collections can fall when tax rates are reduced.

The end of the GST compensation cess may also have lowered the total collected.
