Sweden May Fund Ukraine Gripen Deal Amid Financing Talks
Imagine Ukraine wants to buy some really cool fighter jets from Sweden, called Gripens.
These jets are like fast airplanes that help a country protect itself.
Buying so many jets is very expensive, and Ukraine isn't sure how it will pay for all of them, especially while also dealing with a war.
So, Sweden's defense minister said they are talking about ways to help.
Sweden might use some of its own money set aside to help Ukraine, and they are also looking at other countries to chip in.
They're even exploring if they can use money that was frozen from Russia.
The goal is to help Ukraine get these important planes to defend its skies.
Sweden and Ukraine are progressing on financing a potential deal for up to 150 Gripen E fighter jets.
Sweden's defense minister stated Stockholm may fund part of the deal through its military aid framework.
Other financing options include export credits, frozen Russian assets, and contributions from a coalition of 16 European countries.
Saab manufactures the Gripen jets, which are considered a lower-cost alternative to other advanced warplanes.
First deliveries of the Gripen jets could occur within three years, with significant production efforts underway.
