Engineering Degrees Expand Beyond Traditional Branches in AI Era
Engineering is no longer only about working in the branch a student studied.
Many students are choosing subjects such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.
However, teachers say that choosing the most popular branch does not guarantee success.
Real jobs also require practical experience, communication and teamwork.
Civil engineering can still offer interesting opportunities and less competition.
AI can help people solve problems, but people must decide which problems are important.
They must also check whether AI’s answers are correct.
The most valuable engineers may be those who keep learning and use their knowledge to solve real-world problems.
Students are increasingly choosing newer engineering streams such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Workplace experience highlights the importance of practical skills, communication, networking and continuous learning.
Educators say engineering graduates can move across professions, reflecting the degree’s versatility rather than its failure.
Civil engineering advocates argue the field offers creativity, lower competition and distinct career paths.
AI-era graduates are expected to formulate worthwhile problems, assess technology’s answers and retain responsibility for decisions.

- Engineering students, graduates and educators, including Keval Mande, Dr Sabbineni Nagini, Alwal Srivasthav and Dr Amogh Deshmukh.
- What
- A discussion about how the meaning and value of an engineering degree are changing in an AI-driven workplace.
- When
- The discussion concerns 2026 and comes as Engineers’ Day approaches on September 15.
- Where
- The perspectives come from Hyderabad, including the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, VNRVJIET and Woxsen University.
- Why
- Changing workplace expectations and the growth of AI are increasing demand for practical experience, communication, judgment and adaptability alongside technical knowledge.
Broader Engineering Paths
Popular Specialisations
What an engineering degree should lead to
Broader Engineering Paths
Moving into different professions shows that engineering provides versatile knowledge and can support changing career aspirations.
Popular Specialisations
The popularity of computer science, artificial intelligence and machine learning reflects students’ pursuit of current opportunities and perceived job security.
Choosing a branch
Broader Engineering Paths
Students should consider less crowded fields such as civil engineering, which may offer creativity, scope and distinct career paths.
Popular Specialisations
Many students prefer CSE and AI-related branches because they are seen as more relevant to present workplace demand.
Role of technical education
Broader Engineering Paths
Strong fundamentals remain useful, but graduates also need hands-on experience, communication, judgment, empathy and accountability.
Popular Specialisations
Technical skills and AI tools can improve employability, but graduates must still learn to formulate problems and evaluate technology’s answers.
- Engineers’ Day
- Observed on September 15 to commemorate the birth anniversary of civil engineer Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
- Emerging streams
- Students are increasingly favouring artificial intelligence and machine learning.
- Workplace learning
- Practical experience teaches graduates about companies, products, specifications and how systems work together.
- Important skills
- Communication, interpersonal skills, networking, empathy, design thinking and problem-solving were identified as valuable.
- Civil engineering
- The field was described as creative, relatively less competitive and capable of offering distinct career paths.
- AI limitation
- AI can answer a question effectively but cannot decide whether it was the right question to ask.
- Graduate expectations
- Employers increasingly expect more than programming knowledge, fundamentals and aptitude-test performance.
