BIS seizes 804 grams of non-hallmarked gold jewellery

BIS seizes 804 grams of non-hallmarked gold jewellery

The Bureau of Indian Standards, or BIS, checks whether some products meet required standards.

On September 1, 2026, its Chennai office found gold jewellery being sold without hallmarks.

Hallmarks show the purity of gold.

Officials seized almost 804 grams of jewellery from a shop in Ambattur.

The items included mangalsutras, children’s bangles, earrings and pendants.

The jewellery was taken for investigation.

BIS said enforcement helps prevent the sale of substandard products.

People can check the identification number on properly hallmarked jewellery using the BIS CARE app.
