BJP Accuses TMC MLA of Dual State Voter Registration Amidst Election List Controversy
Imagine your town has a list of all the grown-ups who can vote.
Now, imagine someone's name is on the voting list in two different towns, possibly even in different states.
That's what's happening here.
A politician from one state (West Bengal) has been accused by another politician (from the BJP party) of also being on the voting list in a different state (Uttar Pradesh).
The accuser thinks this is wrong because it might mean the voting process isn't fair.
The politician who is accused says he only votes in his own state and that it's the election officials' job to make sure the lists are correct.
This is all happening while election officials are updating the voting lists to make sure they are accurate.
BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul alleges TMC MLA Hareram Singh is registered to vote in both Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
Singh's name appears on the voter list for the Bansdih Assembly constituency in Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh, updated on October 25, 2024.
His name is also listed in the voter roll for the Pandaveswar Assembly constituency in West Burdwan, West Bengal, updated on December 24, 2024.
Hareram Singh denies voting in Uttar Pradesh and states he only votes in West Bengal.
The Election Commission of India is responsible for verifying and correcting voter lists, and an investigation may occur if a formal complaint is lodged.
