RBI Revises Priority Sector Lending Norms
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has updated the rules for priority sector lending (PSL), which is when banks lend money to important areas like small businesses and affordable housing.
The new rules want banks to lend directly instead of using other companies to do it for them.
This is to make sure the loans are given properly and to the right people.
Banks have been lending more than the required amount, but the RBI wants them to be more careful and transparent.
The RBI also noticed that public sector banks are slower in reducing interest rates for loans compared to private and foreign banks.
This is because public banks use a different system that doesn't change rates as quickly.
The RBI wants banks to pass on the benefits of lower interest rates to borrowers faster.
RBI revised PSL norms to push for direct lending and reduce reliance on NBFCs.
Public sector banks have been slower in transmitting repo rate cuts to borrowers compared to private and foreign banks.
Foreign banks have fully transmitted rate cuts to both fresh and outstanding loans.
Private banks have transmitted about three-fourths of the rate cuts to loans.
Public sector banks have only transmitted about half of the rate cuts to loans.
