China Expands Exit Bans Over Technology and Security Risks

China Expands Exit Bans Over Technology and Security Risks

China has created new rules about who may enter or leave the country.

Officials can stop Chinese citizens from leaving if their technology-related activities could harm national security.

This can include breaking rules about exporting or importing technology.

People who commit certain illegal acts abroad may also be stopped from leaving after they return to China.

Those bans can last from six months to three years.

Foreign visitors who give false information on visa applications may be kept out of China for one to five years.

Taiwan is worried that the rules could affect Taiwanese people working in China’s technology industries.

Analysts say some of the wording is broad and could give officials substantial freedom.

China says the rules protect national interests and make border management clearer.
