Supreme Court Seeks Release of Frozen TMC Funds for Daily Expenses
The Supreme Court is looking at whether the government agency that is investigating the Trinamool Congress (TMC) can let the party use some of the money that has been locked up.
The TMC says it needs the money to pay its workers and run its offices.
The agency says the money might be linked to illegal activity and must stay frozen until the investigation is finished.
The court will decide if a small amount can be released for everyday costs.
The case is still being heard, and a decision is expected soon.
Supreme Court asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to release part of the frozen TMC accounts for daily expenses.
The ED froze three TMC accounts totaling Rs 440.42 crore under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
TMC argues the accounts are needed to pay salaries and run party operations.
ED maintains the funds may be linked to money laundering and must remain frozen.
The court will hear the matter again on August 11, 2024.
