Sensex Plunges 1,124 Points as Crude Prices Surge
Indian stock markets had a very difficult day on Monday.
The Sensex fell by more than 1,100 points, and the Nifty dropped below 22,800.
This means that many large Indian companies became less valuable during trading.
Almost every major stock went down, with Infosys the only Sensex company that gained.
Oil prices rose because investors worried that tensions involving the United States and Iran could disrupt supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
Higher US bond yields and foreign investors selling Indian shares also made investors nervous.
Several Asian markets fell, adding to the negative mood.
The market had risen on the previous Friday before this sharp decline.
The Sensex fell 1,124.02 points, or 1.52%, to 72,771.72, its lowest close since March 30, 2026.
The Nifty dropped 360.25 points, or 1.56%, to 22,780.25, with 47 of its 50 constituents closing lower.
Twenty-nine of the 30 Sensex companies declined, while Infosys was the only gainer.
Brent crude rose 3.81% to USD 108.30 per barrel amid uncertainty over US-Iran talks and the Strait of Hormuz.
Foreign institutional investors sold Rs 3,693.93 crore of equities on Friday as higher US yields and weak Asian markets added pressure.
