Delhi Traffic Curbs: Mixed Enforcement on Day 1
On the first day of Delhi's new traffic rules, police and toll collectors were checking cars at the city's borders.
They were stopping cars that don't meet the clean air rules, especially those from other states.
Some cars were fined Rs 20,000, but police let a few go without a fine because it was the first day.
Not all border points had police, and some officers seemed unsure about the rules.
The goal is to keep Delhi's air cleaner by stopping old, polluting cars from entering the city.
Toll collectors were present at all checked borders, but Delhi Police were only at Kapashera and M G Road.
Police at Chilla, Kalindi, and DND fined non-BS-VI vehicles Rs 20,000 and turned them back.
Some vehicles were let off without fines if owners seemed unable to pay.
Police at Kalindi Kunj penalized vehicles without valid pollution under control certificates (PUCCs).
Enforcement was initially lenient to avoid traffic congestion, but became stricter as the day progressed.
