ED Raids in UP Cough Syrup Case
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Uttar Pradesh Police are conducting raids on multiple locations to investigate an illegal cough syrup trade racket.
They are looking into money laundering and the illegal sale of codeine-based syrups.
The raids are happening in several cities, including Lucknow and Varanasi.
The main accused, Shubham Jaiswal, has fled to Dubai, while his father has been arrested.
The police have made 32 arrests so far and have seized documents and other items linked to the illegal activities.
The total estimated proceeds from the crime are about Rs 1,000 crore.
The investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are expected.
ED conducted raids at 25 locations in six cities as part of a money-laundering investigation into an illegal cough syrup trade racket in UP.
Raids targeted locations linked to absconding main accused Shubham Jaiswal and his associates, including a Chartered Accountant and cough syrup manufacturers.
ED's action is based on about 30 UP Police FIRs related to the misuse of codeine-based cough syrups, their illegal manufacturing, trade, and transport.
The total proceeds of crime estimated in the case is about Rs 1,000 crore.
Shubham Jaiswal is understood to have fled to Dubai while his father has been arrested by UP Police, with a total of 32 persons taken into custody.
