Two-Wheeler Makers Seek Subsidy Extension
Big companies that make two-wheelers in India, like Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, and TVS Motor Co., want the government to extend a subsidy scheme for electric two-wheelers.
This scheme, called the PM E-Drive scheme, gives money to help people buy electric scooters.
The companies say that not all the money has been used yet, and they want to keep the scheme going until all the money is used up.
They also say that a problem with getting special magnets from China has made it hard to meet some rules for the subsidies.
The government has said that the scheme is only for a certain amount of money, but the companies are hoping for an extension.
Right now, only a small part of the two-wheelers sold in India are electric, and the companies want to change that.
Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, and TVS Motor Co. seek extension of subsidies for electric two-wheelers beyond March 2026.
The PM E-Drive scheme has allocated ₹1,772 crore for incentives, with ₹10,000 per scooter.
About 590,000 electric two-wheelers remain eligible for subsidies before the 2.48 million-unit target is met.
The rare-earth magnet crisis from China has hindered localization requirements for subsidies.
EV penetration in the two-wheeler segment is stagnant at 6.3% in 2025.
