Sheinbaum Vows to Defend Mexico’s Sovereignty Amid US Tensions

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said her country wants to work peacefully with other nations.

She also said cooperation must not mean giving up Mexico’s independence.

She described relations with the United States as difficult, especially because of how some migrants are treated.

She said 17 Mexican citizens have died in United States immigration detention centers.

Many other Mexicans have been arrested during immigration raids.

Mexico created a program called “Mexico te abraza” to help people sent back to Mexico.

The program has helped more than 281,000 deported or repatriated Mexicans with food, transportation, healthcare and documents.

She said Mexico and the United States are still talking about trade and security.

She emphasized that security cooperation must respect Mexico’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
