1991 India-Pakistan Pact Limits Military Exercises Near Borders

India and Pakistan made an agreement in 1991 about how their militaries should conduct exercises.

The agreement covers their armies, navies and air forces.

It says they should not hold very large exercises too close to each other.

If an exercise happens in certain areas, the main forces cannot point toward the other country.

The countries also cannot store large amounts of weapons or supplies near those exercise areas.

These rules are meant to make military drills look less threatening.

They reduce the chance that one country mistakes a drill for preparations for an attack.

The agreement is receiving renewed attention because of these limits.
