Haryana Contractual Professors Seek Job Security
In Haryana, India, about 1,400 teachers who work as contractual assistant professors in 14 state universities want the government to give them job security until they are 60 years old.
They met with the Chief Minister and the Education Minister to ask for a new law to be passed during the upcoming Winter Session of the Assembly, which starts on December 18.
The teachers have been waiting for over a year for this security.
Some of them have been working since 2010 and earn less than half of what regular professors with the same experience make.
The government is still gathering information from some universities before deciding whether to pass the law.
A committee was formed in December 2024 to look into making this change.
1,400 contractual assistant professors in Haryana seek job security up to age 60.
Delegation met with Chief Minister and Education Minister to push for a Bill in the upcoming Winter Session.
Government seeks additional information from six universities before tabling the Bill.
Eligibility for job security requires five years of service by August 15, 2024.
Contractual professors earn Rs 57,700 monthly, less than half of regular professors' salaries.
