Brit List Scripts Show UK Film & TV Industry Tightening Budgets
Imagine a special list that highlights the best new movie and TV show ideas from new writers in the UK.
Normally, many of these exciting ideas quickly get picked up by companies that want to make them.
But this year, fewer than ever have found a home.
This shows that the movie and TV business is not spending as much money as before.
Companies that make shows are being more careful because big streaming services, like the ones you might watch shows on, are investing less.
They are worried about making money back, so they prefer older, familiar stories instead of brand new ones from new writers.
This makes it harder for new talent to get their ideas made into shows or movies.
Only 3 out of 15 scripts on the 2025 Brit List are attached to a production company, a significant drop from previous years.
Brit List founder Alexandra Arlango describes the trend as a sign of the industry moving from "boom time to a very harsh tightening of the belt."
Streamer pullbacks from the UK and a focus on profitability are cited as major reasons for the decreased investment in new scripts.
Producers are becoming more cautious, favoring reboots and existing intellectual property over new talent and original ideas.
Despite the challenges, there is a large pool of brilliant, available scripts, presenting opportunities for those willing to take risks.
