BMC Receives No Response for Cycle Track Maintenance Despite Extended Deadline
Imagine a very long bike path in Mumbai that cost a lot of money to build, like a special road just for bikes.
It was made to encourage people to ride bikes, but now, not many people use it.
Instead, people are putting their stuff on it or doing bad things there.
The city's government, called the BMC, wants someone to take care of the path, like mowing the grass and fixing things.
They even asked for a longer time to find someone.
But, nobody has said they want the job.
People in the city think it's a waste of money because it's not being used for its intended purpose and is becoming messy.
The BMC has received no responses for the maintenance of an 18.6 km cycle track, even after extending the Expression of Interest (EoI) deadline to mid-November.
The cycle track, built in 2020 at a cost of Rs 500 crore to promote cycling, runs along the Tansa pipeline from Mulund to Sion.
The BMC's Hydraulic Engineering department floated the EoI for a two-year maintenance contract covering the cycle track, horticulture, walkway, and service road.
Citizens view the cycle track as a failed project, neglected and prone to encroachment and illegal activities, representing a waste of public funds.
The project was initiated in 2018 as part of the 'Green Wheels Along Blue Lines' initiative to prevent re-encroachment after large-scale demolitions.
