Mamata's Trinamool Faces Rebel Challenge After Assembly Defeat
Mamata Banerjee's party, Trinamool Congress, is facing a serious internal split.
Many of its lawmakers now support rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee.
The Assembly Speaker has provisionally accepted Ritabrata as the Leader of the Opposition.
A court has not stopped that decision for now.
Mamata's preferred candidate, Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, did not receive enough support from lawmakers.
The rebellion followed a poor election result for Trinamool Congress.
Some rebels still recognise Mamata as the party's top leader but oppose Abhishek Banerjee's influence.
Mamata is trying to rebuild support, although the article says she has fewer resources and allies than before.
The Calcutta High Court declined interim relief to Mamata Banerjee's faction in its challenge over West Bengal's Leader of Opposition post.
Speaker Rathindra Bose provisionally recognised Ritabrata Banerjee as Leader of Opposition for two months or until further court orders.
Ritabrata's faction claims support from about 58 of Trinamool Congress's 80 MLAs, while Mamata's nominee Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay was rejected.
The rebellion reflects frustration after Trinamool Congress won 80 of 294 Assembly seats against the Bharatiya Janata Party's 208.
Mamata is seeking grassroots support and wider alliances, but the article says her faction faces depleted resources and weakened influence.
