Dallas Republicans Frame Midterm Convention as Rally and Rescue
Republicans are planning a large meeting in Dallas before the midterm election.
They want the meeting to encourage people to support President Donald Trump and Republican candidates.
Party leaders plan to talk about tax cuts, immigration and efforts to lower drug prices.
They also plan to criticize Democrats.
Supporters say Trump is very effective at getting voters excited.
Some Republicans worry that Trump’s low approval rating could make it harder for candidates to win.
Some candidates may attend to meet donors and receive media attention.
Other candidates would rather stay in their districts and talk about local problems, especially rising living costs.
Republicans view the September 9-10 Dallas convention as a chance to regain momentum before the November 3 election.
Organizers plan to highlight Trump’s tax cuts, immigration policies and other claimed achievements while criticizing Democrats as increasingly socialist.
Republican officials say Donald Trump will anchor the event, but critics warn his 33% approval rating could hurt vulnerable candidates.
The convention is expected to attract about 30,000 people and has raised $42 million, according to co-chair Ray Washburne.
Some candidates see the gathering as useful for fundraising and exposure, while others worry it will distract from local issues and cost-of-living concerns.
