Harvard Agrees to $53 Million Settlement Over Donated Remains

Harvard Agrees to $53 Million Settlement Over Donated Remains

Families donated their loved ones’ bodies to Harvard for medical teaching and research.

A former morgue manager named Cedric Lodge took parts of some donated bodies.

Prosecutors said he and his wife, Denise, sold or shipped those remains to buyers.

The reported trafficking occurred between 2018 and 2020, or possibly into early 2023, depending on the account.

Lodge pleaded guilty and was sentenced to eight years in prison.

His wife received a 12-month prison sentence.

The families sued Harvard, saying it did not protect the remains properly.

Harvard agreed to a $53 million settlement, subject to final court approval, along with new safety measures and a scholarship honoring body donors.
