He thought that Shah Rukh would be restricted in his films, which would be unfair to both the actor and his fans.

Varma also said that he didn't feel capable of handling Shah Rukh's image and that the actor doesn't need a director to be great.

He praised Shah Rukh's ability to perform without much direction.

Instead of Shah Rukh, Ajay Devgn played the lead role in Varma's film Company, which also starred other famous actors like Vivek Oberoi, Mohanlal, Manisha Koirala, Seema Biswas, and Antara Mali.
