Allahabad HC Quashes Man's Conviction in Rape Case
The Allahabad High Court in India decided to cancel the punishment of a man who was earlier found guilty of kidnapping and raping his live-in partner.
The court said that the laws in India are not fair to men in such cases because they were made a long time ago when people did not live together without getting married.
The court found that the woman in the case was an adult and had a willing relationship with the man.
The court also said that the woman's mother might have lied about her daughter's age to get money from the government.
The man was in jail for a long time, but now the court has said he should be set free.
The Allahabad High Court quashed a man's conviction in a case of abduction for marriage and rape of his live-in partner.
The court observed that laws favor women and were made before the concept of live-in relationships existed.
The victim was found to be a major and had a consenting relationship with the appellant.
The court noted that the victim's mother might have lied about her daughter's age to get compensation.
The appellant was sentenced to seven years imprisonment under IPC sections 363 and 366, 20 years under the POCSO Act, and life imprisonment under the SC/ST Act, all of which were set aside by the High Court.
