Paris Police Chief Calls Student Protests Out of Control

Students across France are protesting about their schools.

They say classrooms are too crowded, teachers are often missing, and some buildings are in poor condition.

Police and students clashed in several places.

The Paris police chief said the protests had become difficult to control and asked students to protest peacefully.

He also warned that authorities would respond firmly to violence and damage.

About 5,000 people, mostly teenagers, had been arrested since Monday.

More than 600 police officers were reported injured.

Student unions planned a nationwide demonstration for Tuesday, and officials worried it could become violent.
