Telangana Contract Faculty Seek Pay Parity and Job Security
Contract teachers at 12 universities in Telangana say they need better pay and more certainty about their jobs.
Some say they have worked at the universities for more than 20 years.
They say their pay has not been updated in the same way as regular teachers’ pay.
They want a basic salary of ₹57,700, yearly raises and other benefits.
They also want eligible contract teachers to be given permanent jobs.
The teachers say many university teaching posts are vacant and want some set aside for them.
A government order lays out how assistant professors will be recruited and gives points for teaching experience.
The teachers say an earlier spoken promise to protect their jobs has not been put into a formal order.
They are considering protests or legal action if the government does not respond.
Contract faculty at 12 Telangana state universities are seeking revised pay scales, job security and service protection.

Contract teachers last received a salary revision in 2018 under the 6th PRC-UGC scales; regular university teachers received 7th PRC scales in 2019.
Their demands include basic pay of ₹57,700, annual increments, allowances, a PhD incentive and absorption of eligible teachers.
The association says 2,125 of 2,878 sanctioned teaching posts are vacant and proposes reserving 1,200 posts for existing contract teachers.
