Chennai Environmentalists Raise Concerns Over Waste Plant
Imagine the city wants to build a plant to turn trash into energy near a place that's home to many birds and helps prevent floods.
An environmental group says this is a bad idea because the area is important for birds, including some that are rare or travel here.
They found 50 different bird species in the area.
Also, the area helps soak up extra water during heavy rains, preventing floods.
Building the plant there could make flooding worse for nearby neighborhoods because it would block where the water naturally drains.
The environmental group suggests the city build the plant somewhere else, like on an already messy land, so the birds and the neighborhood don't get hurt.
Palluyir Trust opposes a waste-to-energy plant in Sathangadu, Chennai.
The proposed site is near the Kodungaiyur dumpyard and is an ecologically sensitive wetland.
Naturalists recorded 50 bird species at the site, including threatened and migratory birds.
The wetland acts as a floodplain, and a plant could worsen urban flood vulnerability.
Residents propose alternative locations such as the existing landfill site.
