H-2B Visa Cap Limits Foreign Workers, Barely Affecting Indians
The United States allows some employers to temporarily hire workers from other countries for seasonal, non-farm jobs.
This system is called the H-2B visa program.
The first set of 33,000 visas for the 2027 financial year has already been requested.
That means workers whose jobs start before April 1, 2027, cannot use the regular first-half quota.
Another 33,000 visas are available for jobs beginning on or after April 1, 2027.
The government might approve more visas, but that is not guaranteed.
Most Indian workers are not directly affected because India is usually not on the list of countries eligible for H-2B visas.
Indians more commonly use other routes, such as H-1B visas, student pathways, or family immigration.
The United States has filled all 33,000 H-2B visas for jobs beginning between October 1, 2026, and March 31, 2027.
Applications submitted after September 4, 2026, will be rejected if they are subject to the H-2B cap.
The second-half allocation of 33,000 visas remains available for jobs beginning from April 1 through September 30, 2027.
H-2B visas support temporary, nonagricultural jobs in industries including hospitality, landscaping, restaurants, and seafood processing.
Most Indian workers are unlikely to be directly affected because India is generally outside the H-2B eligible-country framework.
