Protests in Karbi Anglong Over Land Disputes
In Assam's Karbi Anglong districts, people are protesting because they believe others are taking their ancestral lands.
The protests turned violent when the crowd set fire to a leader's house and some shops, and the police had to use force to control them.
Four people and a policeman got hurt.
The protesters wanted the government to protect their lands and remove the people they believe are illegally living there.
They had been on a hunger strike for 12 days, but they stopped after the government promised to talk about the issue.
The area is still under strict rules to keep things calm, and more police have been sent to help.
The leader whose house was burned said it was a misunderstanding, and the Chief Minister said they are trying to resolve the issue peacefully.
Protesters in Karbi Anglong districts set fire to the home of KAAC Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang and around 15 shops in Kheroni Bazaar over alleged encroachment on tribal lands.
Police resorted to lathi-charge and firing after protesters engaged in stone-pelting and refused to disperse, resulting in at least four people and one policeman being injured.
Protesters had been on a 12-day hunger strike demanding the eviction of non-tribals from Professional Grazing Reserves (PGR) and Village Grazing Reserves (VGR).
The hunger strike was called off on Tuesday, December 23, 2023, following talks with Assam minister Ranoj Pegu, who assured that tripartite talks will be held on the issue soon.
Prohibitory orders and night curfew are still in force in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts to maintain law and order.
