Telangana Merges 27 ULBs Into GHMC
The Telangana government, led by Congress, has decided to merge 27 urban local bodies around Hyderabad's Outer Ring Road into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
This move is set to happen just before the rural local body elections.
The government says this will help with better resource management and development.
However, the BJP and the BRS (Bharat Rashtra Samithi) are against this decision.
They think it's a political move to benefit the Congress.
The BJP is especially worried because this might affect their performance in the upcoming elections.
The BRS also says the decision was made without proper study and is more about political control than development.
The merger will significantly expand the GHMC's area and the number of wards, which could impact the political landscape.
The government is also fast-tracking the merger to meet the Centre's deadline of December 31, 2025, for freezing boundaries for the Census.
The Centre for Good Governance (CGG) has been assigned to conduct a comprehensive study to recommend new boundaries and administrative structures for the expanded GHMC.
Telangana Congress government proposes merging 27 urban local bodies into GHMC ahead of rural local body polls.
Government cites efficient resource mobilization, disaster management, and investments as reasons for the merger.
BJP and BRS oppose the move, alleging political motives and lack of study.
Merger expected to expand GHMC area from 625 sq km to over 2,000 sq km and increase wards from 150 to about 250.
