Gor’s Kashmir Statement Signals Shift in US Position

US Ambassador Sergio Gor visited Srinagar and said Jammu and Kashmir is an important part of India.

The article says this is different from how some American officials discussed Kashmir many decades ago.

In the 1950s, American diplomats met Sheikh Abdullah and discussed the possibility of an independent Kashmir.

The United States also supported a 1948 UN resolution that treated Kashmir as an international dispute.

In 1993, another senior US official called Kashmir disputed and questioned whether its accession to India was legally final.

Pakistan protested Gor’s recent statement.

The writer believes the statement shows that Washington is now accepting India’s position more clearly.

The writer also says India must still strengthen democracy, rights, reconciliation and elected government in Jammu and Kashmir.
