Aditya Vikram Birla was an Indian businessman who wanted to build factories around the world.

He studied chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In 1965, he returned to India and started a textile business.

In 1969, he opened a factory in Thailand, even though India had many rules making new businesses difficult.

He later built companies in several Asian countries and Egypt.

His businesses made textiles, aluminium, chemicals, fertilisers, palm oil and other products.

He also supported education, healthcare, community development and the performing arts.

After he died in 1995, his son Kumar Mangalam Birla continued expanding and organising the group.
