ISRO satellite captures monsoon clouds over India
The Indian monsoon has returned strongly after a short break.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) shared pictures taken by ISRO's INSAT-3DS weather satellite showing thick clouds covering almost all of India.
These clouds are expected to bring heavy rain to many parts of the country in the next few days.
The IMD says different types of clouds reflect light differently, and the thick clouds will bring the most rain.
Earlier predictions said the monsoon would be weaker this year, but now it looks like it will be stronger than expected.
The rain will affect places like Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Konkan, Goa, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
ISRO's INSAT-3DS satellite captured images of monsoon clouds covering 95% of India on July 22, 2026.
The IMD predicts widespread severe weather and heavy rainfall from July 22 to July 24 in multiple regions.
Extremely heavy rain is forecast for isolated pockets of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, southwest Madhya Pradesh, southeast Rajasthan, Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
Earlier climate models predicted a below-normal monsoon, but current observations show widespread overcast skies and heavy rainfall.
Different types of clouds reflect light differently, with cumulonimbus clouds appearing brightest and indicating heavy rain.
