Bombay HC Seeks Centre's Reply on Agniveer Benefits Plea
The Bombay High Court has asked the central government to respond to a plea from the mother of an Agniveer named Murali Naik.
Murali was killed in a shelling incident in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, in May 2023.
His mother is asking the court to make sure that families of Agniveers who die on duty get the same benefits as families of regular soldiers.
The court will hear the case in January.
The mother says it's not fair that Agniveers and regular soldiers do the same job but Agniveers' families don't get the same help.
She wants the government to give her son's family the same pension and support that regular soldiers' families get.
Bombay High Court issued notice to the Union government on a plea seeking equal posthumous benefits for Agniveers.
Agniveer Murali Naik was killed in cross-border shelling in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, on May 9.
The petition argues that Agniveers and regular soldiers perform identical duties but are treated differently regarding benefits.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for January 15, 2024.
The plea contends that the Agnipath scheme is discriminatory and unconstitutional in its exclusion of pensionary benefits for Agniveers.
