Mamdani Wins NYC Mayoral Election with Strong South Asian Support
Zohran Mamdani became the new mayor of New York City.
He is the first South Asian and Muslim mayor.
Many South Asian people in the city voted for him.
This includes Indian, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani communities.
They voted for him even though some groups tried to stop them.
These groups said bad things about Mamdani because he is Muslim and because he criticized the Prime Minister of India.
But most South Asian people still voted for Mamdani.
He won in many places like Park Slope, Hell’s Kitchen, and Jackson Heights.
Some richer Indian American neighborhoods did not support him as much.
Mamdani wants to make the city more affordable.
He promises things like freezing rents and making public transit free.
Many new voters registered to vote for him.
This helped him win the election.
Zohran Mamdani became New York City's first South Asian and Muslim mayor with strong support from South Asian communities.
Indian American voter turnout was particularly high in districts with large South Asian populations, despite opposition from Hindutva groups.
South Asian voter turnout increased by 350%, with Bangladeshi, Indian, and Pakistani communities seeing significant increases.
Mamdani won in key South Asian neighborhoods like Park Slope, Hell’s Kitchen, and Jackson Heights but had weaker support in affluent Indian American areas like Bellerose and Glen Oaks.
Hindutva groups, including 'Indian Americans for Cuomo' and the Gujarati Samaj of New York, opposed Mamdani due to his criticism of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
