Orissa High Court Restores Pension for Retired CRPF Man
A former member of India’s Central Reserve Police Force became unable to work because of schizophrenia.
He retired for medical reasons in 1999, and a 50 per cent disability pension was approved for him.
Later, officials stopped the pension, saying schizophrenia was not a classified disease and he had not served for 10 years.
The man asked the Orissa High Court to review the decision.
The court said that because the pension approval had not been changed, his claim could not be rejected for those reasons.
It cancelled the 2011 rejection order.
The court directed officials to provide the pension and pay the money owed.
The Orissa High Court quashed a 2011 order rejecting a former CRPF member’s disability pension claim.
The man retired on medical grounds in 1999 after being diagnosed with schizophrenia.
His disability pension had been approved at 50 per cent before authorities later revoked it.
Authorities cited schizophrenia’s status as a non-classified disease and his lack of 10 years’ service.
The court directed authorities to grant the pension and release arrears, saying the claim could not be rejected on that basis.
