LTCG Tax Impact on Mutual Funds
When you invest in mutual funds, the money you get back isn't just the profit the fund makes.
The government takes a portion of that profit as tax, called long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax.
For equity funds, if you hold them for more than a year, you only pay tax on profits above Rs 1.25 lakh.
For debt funds, all profits are taxed based on your income level.
This tax can make a big difference in how much money you actually get.
For example, if you invest Rs 10 lakh and it grows to Rs 14.05 lakh in three years, you might only get Rs 13.7 lakh after tax for equity funds and Rs 12.8 lakh for debt funds if you're in the 30% tax bracket.
So, it's important to think about taxes when you're investing to make sure you keep as much of your money as possible.
LTCG tax on equity mutual funds applies to gains above Rs 1.25 lakh per year, held for more than 12 months, taxed at 12.5%.
Debt mutual funds are taxed at the investor's applicable slab rate, regardless of the holding period.
Example: Rs 10 lakh invested in an equity fund for 3 years at 12% CAGR yields a net return of Rs 13.7 lakh after tax.
Same investment in a debt fund for a 30% tax bracket results in a net return of Rs 12.8 lakh.
Frequent switching of funds can lead to higher short-term taxation and reduce long-term benefits.
