Tribunal Overturns DRI Order Confiscating Shark Fins
A tribunal has overturned a previous decision that seized a large amount of shark fins.
Back in 2019, authorities confiscated over 8000 kg of shark fins from a trading firm, claiming they were going to be illegally exported.
The company was also fined.
However, the tribunal reviewed the case and found no proof that the company intended to export the fins.
The company argued that statements they made earlier were obtained under duress.
Therefore, the tribunal decided that the fins should not have been confiscated, and the fine was removed.
CESTAT set aside a DRI order that confiscated over 8000 kg of shark fins.
The DRI had ordered the confiscation and a Rs. 7 crore penalty for alleged illegal export.
The tribunal found no evidence of attempted export by Global Impex Trading.
DRI officers seized the shark fins from Global Impex Trading's premises in 2018.
Global Impex argued statements used by DRI were retracted due to coercion.
