Assam MLA Islam Released After Court Quashes NSA Detention
Aminul Islam is a politician from Assam who was arrested for making comments about a terror attack.
He was first given bail but then detained under a strict law called the National Security Act.
The court said this detention was unfair because the authorities took too long to process his complaints and didn't tell him about his rights on time.
The court ordered him to be released.
His party says the detention was politically motivated.
Islam claims his detention was an act of vengeance by the state government for questioning the central government's handling of the terror attack.
He spent 218 days in prison before being released.
Assam MLA Aminul Islam was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) on May 14, 2025, after being granted bail for comments about the Pahalgam terror attack.
The Gauhati High Court quashed his detention order, citing unexplained delays and procedural violations in handling his representation and informing him of his rights.
The court noted that Islam's representation against detention was forwarded to authorities 12 days late, and he was informed of his right to represent to the Central Government 23 days after detention.
The court ruled that the detention order was vitiated due to these violations and directed Islam's release if not wanted in any other case.
AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal alleged political motivation behind Islam's detention, stating that the charges were baseless and aimed at keeping him behind bars.
