Mumbai‑Pune Rail Link Restored After 23‑Day Landslide Repairs
Central Railway fixed the train tracks between Mumbai and Pune after big landslides caused by heavy rain.
The repair took 23 days and worked on three track lines: Up, Down, and Mid.
More than 11,700 workers and 40 machines helped move a lot of sand, rocks, and special materials to rebuild the tracks.
The worst damage was on the Up line where the ground sank and the track was unsupported.
Now trains can run again, and the railway is adding stronger piles and walls to keep the tracks safe for the future.
Central Railway restored Mumbai‑Pune rail link after 23‑day repair of Karjat‑Lonavala ghat section.
Repairs covered Up, Down and Mid lines, completed on July 28 after heavy monsoon rains caused landslides and embankment failures.
Over 11,700 workers, 40 machines and 140,940 man‑hours were deployed, using 46,460 m³ of granular sub‑base and 2,600 m³ of boulders.
The Up line’s Khandala‑Monkey Hill stretch suffered a 130‑metre settlement, while a 200‑metre hill collapse damaged the Down line between Monkey Hill and Thakurwadi.
Permanent strengthening measures, including 1,200 mm piles and RCC retaining walls, are underway to improve long‑term resilience.
