MCD demolishes encroached structures at Anand Vihar

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) recently demolished several structures in Anand Vihar that were built on public land without permission.

This action was taken following a court order that aimed to clear out unauthorized vendors and free up public space.

The court had been involved in this issue since 2016, when vendors first sought protection.

Over the years, the court narrowed down the list of vendors who could stay, considering factors like air pollution and public safety.

On January 22, 2026, the court ordered the MCD to remove all unauthorized structures by January 30.

Only 105 vendors with proper certificates were allowed to continue vending in designated areas.

The MCD used excavators, trucks, and workers to carry out the demolition and plans to monitor the area to prevent future encroachments.

The court also asked the MCD to create a plan to beautify and redevelop the area, which is due by March 10, 2026.
