UN experts urge Thailand against extradition of journalist Bai Zhaodong

Imagine you had to leave your home country because you were scared, and another country promised to keep you safe.

A journalist named Bai Zhaodong left China in 2023 because he worried he would be treated badly for his human rights work.

He was recognized as an asylum seeker, which means a country agreed he needed protection.

Now he is being held in a detention center in Thailand since January 2026.

The Chinese authorities want to bring him back to China.

But experts at the United Nations say that sending him back could be very dangerous.

They fear he might be hurt or tortured if he returns.

So the UN experts asked Thailand not to hand him over to China.

They reminded Thailand that people seeking safety must be protected and given a fair chance to tell their story.
