Mumbai: BMC Begins Evicting Illegal Hawkers After Court Order
The Mumbai government is kicking out illegal street vendors from a popular shopping street called Colaba Causeway.
This is happening because the court told them to do it.
The government is only going after vendors who don't have permits, not those who are already in a legal fight.
The area has fewer licensed vendors than the vendors' union claims.
People living nearby are happy the government is taking action but worry the vendors will come back.
BMC began evicting unauthorized hawkers from Colaba Causeway in Mumbai.
The action follows a Bombay High Court order from April.
The BMC is primarily targeting hawkers violating rules, not those in a legal battle.
Only 83 licensed hawkers were identified in a BMC survey, compared to the union's claim of 253.
Residents welcomed the eviction but expressed concerns about hawkers returning.
