Novo Nordisk Appeals to Halt Dr. Reddy's Semaglutide Exports
A legal fight is happening between Novo Nordisk and Dr. Reddy's over a weight loss drug called semaglutide, which is used in Wegovy/Ozempic.
Novo Nordisk wants to stop Dr. Reddy's from exporting the drug.
Dr. Reddy's says they won't sell in India, because they don't have a patent here, but want to export to countries where Novo doesn't have a patent.
The court will now decide if Dr. Reddy's can legally export the drug.
This case could set a precedent that affects other generic drugmakers who may want to export similar drugs.
Novo Nordisk is appealing to restrain Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (DRL) from exporting semaglutide.
The case concerns the weight-loss and diabetes drug Wegovy/Ozempic, with semaglutide as its active ingredient.
DRL stated it would not sell domestically but has a license to export to countries without Novo's patent.
DRL plans to export to several countries, including Canada where the patent expires in early 2026.
An IP lawyer noted that this case could bring clarity to Indian patent law.
