Kerala Guv, CM Clash Over VC Appointments
The Supreme Court of India told the Kerala Governor and Chief Minister to agree on who should be the new leaders of two universities by December 9, 2025.
If they can't agree, the court will choose the leaders itself.
The Governor and Chief Minister have different opinions about the names suggested by a special committee.
The Chief Minister says the Governor is not following the court's rules and appointed people who are not eligible.
The Governor wants the Chief Minister to not be involved in choosing the leaders.
The court wants them to pick the most qualified people from the list.
If they don't agree by December 9, the court will make the decision.
The next meeting about this issue is on December 12.
The Supreme Court has asked Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to resolve their disagreement over vice chancellor appointments by December 9, 2025.
The deadlock involves the selection of vice chancellors for APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University and the University of Digital Sciences Innovation and Technology.
A committee led by Justice (Retd) Sudhanshu Dhulia recommended names for the positions, but the Governor and Chief Minister disagree on some of the candidates.
The Supreme Court warned it will appoint the vice chancellors itself if no consensus is reached by the deadline.
The Chief Minister alleges that the Governor violated Supreme Court orders by appointing ineligible vice chancellors, while the Governor seeks to exclude the Chief Minister from the selection process.
